The evolving utility technology marketplace requires research that combines both big picture perspective with actionable information and management guidance. With the aid of the UTC Research Steering Committee, and input from its member communications and IT professionals from over 750 utilities, UTC Research identifies the most important topics on behalf of members. With the aid of some of the best-known consultancies in the utility telecom field, UTC Research publishes an ambitious annual roster of new titles that inform, educate and guide utility communications implementation and investment.

Reports, such as our 2007 "Next Steps to the Next-Generation Utility" [2], provide thoughtful, broad perspective on some of the largest and most significant developments that will guide utility communications investments for decades to come. Other reports, such as "NERC CIP Standards: Ten Steps to Compliance" [3], "Wireless Attachment Market Report" [4], and "Substation Communications: Enabler of Automation" [5], provide guidance on important issues facing utility telecom professional today: cyber-security regulatory compliance, substation investment priorities, and comon business practices in wireless pole collocation respectively.

In fiscal year 2008, UTC has already published "Smart Grid Applications: A Guide to Automation Applications and Vendors" [6], "Advanced Metering Infrastructure: Smart Metering Meets the Smart Grid" [7], and "New Directions for Broadband Over Power Line: 2007" [8]. In the near future, UTC will also tackle difficult issues such as communications master planning, mobile radio upgrades related to FCC narrow-banding requirement, and more on Smart Grid investments.

UTC also helps to provide market intelligence for its vendor members and, in 2008, UTC Research will update its popular report, "Telecoms that Utilities Buy". Vendor partners can also sponsor research reports thus linking their products and services with independent UTC Research and demonstrating support of utility telecommunications practitioners. UTC also offers vendors the opportunity to reach the utility marketplace with targeted white papers that promote industry understanding and discuss specific vendor solutions to common implementations decisions.

Lastly, with unparalleled reach into the utility communications, IT and, especially, mobile radio marketplace, UTC Research--in coordination with the engineers at UTC Spectrum Services--provides industry participants with tailored research, survey, and consulting services all enhanced by UTC's unique perspective.
